Sunday Matters #2
Let’s go! We’re on to Sunday #2 of Sunday Matters! As a reminder, I hope this resource will help us who are tasked with leading in worship to intentionally prepare for our Lord’s Day gathering each week. So, I’ll continue to share a few thoughts from the chapter and highlight a prayer focus. I hope it serves you personally heading into the weekends and collectively as we use it to guide our Green Room prayer moments.
Worship Thought:
This chapter reminds us that one of the purposes of the gathering is actually to confess our dependence upon the Lord. Imagine that! The church is actually NOT a place where it’s a prerequisite to have it all together in order to be welcomed as a worshiper. Even Adam and Eve were created to depend on their Creator in the garden. So, as the church, we gather to reorient our hearts to the reality that we are God’s needy, weak, broken, and confused children. But the amazing thing is this: he meets with his children! So let’s ask our Father to meet us in our need, form our hearts to his, and lead us to his throne of grace this Sunday.
“The gathering of the church is the assembly of God’s needy children.” (pg. 14)
The culture around us is screaming for independence at every turn, but when we come to gather we are unashamedly pleading for a heart of dependence as we lay our weaknesses upon our gracious Father. We desperately need a gospel perspective to wash over us, right? We can be assured that as we humbly submit ourselves in worship to Jesus again today, he understands our weakness and, he will be victorious to lead us forward by his grace and mercy into another week. May our hears be reFORMED by this truth as we gather this Sunday.
Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. (Hebrews 4:14–16)
Let's Pray this way for our church:
Father, help us to understand our daily need for your love, wisdom, power, and grace today. We want to hear and follow your voice above all others. Rid us of our stubborn independence and easily overwhelmed hearts to admit our need of you now. Form our hearts as a church to draw near to you with confidence and find that your grace is all-sufficient in our need. Amen.
