Sunday Matters #17

This week we are continuing on in our devotional book, Sunday Matters, with chapter 17. The chapter fit so well with a few of the songs we’re leading this week, so i thought that instead of writing a post, it might be encouraging to just take some time to meditate on a passage from our liturgy this week along with some of the lyrics. We can be tempted to become discouraged by the kingdoms of this world we see being built all around us, but I pray you are reminded how God is advancing his kingdom in the hearts of his people when we gather. He will not fail us because our foundation is secured in Christ alone! May we worship in light of this truth again this week.

Chapter 17 summary:
Corporate worship is designed to remind you that everything in life will fail you. Build your hope in Jesus. (pg.87)

As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For it stands in Scripture: “Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”

—1 Peter 2:4–6

Christ is my firm foundation
The rock on which I stand
When everything around me is shaken
I've never been more glad
That I put my faith in Jesus
'Cause He's never let me down
He's faithful through generations
So why would He fail now?

He won't, He won't

I've still got joy in chaos
I've got peace that makes no sense
So I won't be going under
I'm not held by my own strength
'Cause I've built my life on Jesus
He's never let me down
He's faithful in every season
So why would He fail now?

He won't, He won't
He won't fail, He won't fail

Rain came and wind blew
But my house was built on You
I'm safe with You
I'm gonna make it through

Yeah, I'm gonna make it through
'Cause my house is built on you

Christ is my firm foundation
The rock on which I stand
When everything around me is shaken
I've never been more glad
That I put my faith in Jesus
'Cause He's never let me down
He's faithful through generations
So why would He fail now?

He won't, He won't
He won't fail, He won't fail
No, He won’t

In Christ alone, my hope is found
He is my light, my strength, my song
This Cornerstone, this solid ground
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm
What heights of love, what depths of peace
When fears are stilled, when strivings cease
My Comforter, my All in All
Here in the love of Christ I stand

In Christ alone, who took on flesh
Fullness of God in helpless babe
This gift of love and righteousness
Scorned by the ones He came to save
'Til on that cross as Jesus died
The wrath of God was satisfied
For every sin on Him was laid
Here in the death of Christ I live, I live

There in the ground His body lay
Light of the world by darkness slain
Then bursting forth in glorious Day
Up from the grave He rose again
And as He stands in victory
Sin's curse has lost its grip on me
For I am His and He is mine
Bought with the precious blood of Christ

No guilt in life, no fear in death
This is the power of Christ in me
From life's first cry to final breath
Jesus commands my destiny
No power of hell, no scheme of man
Can ever pluck me from His hand
Till He returns or calls me home
Here in the power of Christ I'll stand
